The Government’s latest announcement, that the Chichester area, which we are a part of is now in a state of high alert known as Tier 2.

This means we will reopen on December 2nd

as a restaurant providing table service only.

We will not sell alcohol unless it is accompanied by a substantial meal from our festive,

pub classic, or sandwich menus.

****** There can be no exceptions ******

As a result of having to adapt to the new Tier 2 rules, we have to temporarily change our trading hours to remain viable.

You can find our temporary new opening times below.

We must rely on you, our fabulous guests, reserving ahead so we, in turn, can ensure we have an adequate amount of stock and staff to ensure we can continue to provide you with quality locally sourced food and great service from our lovely front of house team.

We ask you to please take some time to familiarise yourself with the new Tier 2 rules by visiting the government website by clicking here

but in the meantime, if you have any questions about your visit to us please call us on

As featured in the Best of England Pub Guide top 100 best English Pubs.

The Stag Inn is set in the beautiful West Sussex hamlet of Balls Cross in Petworth.

Our pub is notable for its little-altered pub interior. The historic core is the two rooms at the center of the pub, which was extended in the late 19th or early 20th century when the former post office cottage was added. A fourth room, formerly the beer store, became the games room in the mid-1990s.

Our public bar has large Horsham flagstones - some 3ft x 4ft but all irregular shapes. Folklore has it that these were laid first, and the building constructed around them!

The old inglenook fireplace is essentially unaltered over the centuries and during the winter it provides a focal point for a comforting relaxing warm welcome...literally.

The Stag Inn is included in the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors, as an important surviving example of a simple pub interior which is largely unaltered since the 19th century.

"Beer, at least figuratively, is in our blood. Badger, our crown jewel, is so much more than just beer; it is rich in heritage, expertise, and craftsmanship. It is woven into the tapestry of the last two and a half centuries of world history. And since we started brewing in 1777 we have proudly remained family-owned and Dorset-based."
