The Stag Inn is a country pub in the hamlet of Balls Cross near Petworth, West Sussex, serving well-kept cask ales, locally sourced seasonal food, and traditional British pub dishes in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

Set in the heart of Balls Cross, The Stag Inn is known for its little-altered pub interior. The historic core comprises two central rooms, later extended in the late 19th or early 20th century when the former post office cottage was incorporated. A fourth room, formerly the beer store, became the games room in the mid-1990s.

Our public bar features large Horsham flagstones — some measuring up to 3ft by 4ft, all irregular in shape. Local folklore suggests these were laid first, with the building constructed around them.

The old inglenook fireplace remains largely unchanged and, during the winter months, provides a warm and welcoming focal point for guests.

The Stag Inn is included in the Campaign for Real Ale’s National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors, recognised as an important surviving example of a simple pub interior that has remained largely unaltered since the 19th century.

Today, The Stag Inn remains a true village pub, popular for its cask ales, seasonal menus, and traditional Sunday roasts, welcoming both locals and visitors to West Sussex.
